Vinci Construction Grands Projets has secured a contract from the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority to extend the drinking water production plant supplying Bakheng, located in the north of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh.

\n\n

This €94 million design-build contract covers construction of a new raw water intake from the Mekong river and a new line with capacity to treat 195,000 cu m of water a day.

\n\n

The construction site will employ 1,600 people at its peak. A large majority of the workers and supervisors will be Cambodian, with women expected to account for 30% of the workforce, and Vinci Construction Grands Projets will train them in building trades.

\n\n

From an environmental perspective, Vinci Construction Grands Projets will use concrete that emits 30% less carbon than standard local equivalents; set up a 3,500-panel (9,000 sq m photovoltaic array) to cover 15% of the facility’s energy requirements; deploy Smart Users, an innovative solution developed by its subsidiary WMI to measure and manage water consumption at the worksite and facilities (including offices and concrete plant).

\n\n

The extension, which is part of the government’s programme to bring drinking water to the country’s entire population by 2030, will supply 750,000 people living to the north of the capital by 2028. The project will benefit from Vinci Construction Grands Projets’ expertise in hydraulic infrastructure and its experience expanding access to water in Cambodia. It follows on from the first two works phases at the same plant – which currently provides water for some two million people – that were handed over in June 2023 and March 2024.

Vinci Construction, through its local subsidiary Bachy Soletanche Group Limited, has won a contract to build the foundations of a major property development in Hong Kong’s central business district.

\n\n

Totalling about €80 million (approximately US$80 million), the contract includes the construction of diaphragm walls and bored piles. Scheduled for completion by 2024, the works will be conducted in a highly complex environment, immediately next to an underground urban motorway and the metro.

\n\n

According to Vinci, a part of the wall will be built at limited height using two compact Hydrofraise machines, one of which will be equipped with grippers for drilling into very hard ground. These machines have been specifically designed and manufactured by Soletanche Bachy for excavation works in hard surfaces.

\n\n

Soletanche Bachy is a world leader in foundation and soil technology projects requiring advanced technical expertise. With some 50 years of experience operating in Hong Kong, the company has participated in numerous large-scale projects in the region – including dams, metro lines, high-rise buildings and, more recently, in the construction of the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport and in foundation works in the West Kowloon cultural district.

Vinci Construction Grands Projets has signed a contract with the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority to design and build the Bakheng water treatment plant, located in the northern outskirts of the Cambodian capital.

\n\n

The first phase of the project, totalling US$155 million (€141 million), covers the construction of several elements. These include: a first treatment line with a capacity of 195,000 cu m/day; the intake in the Mekong River with a capacity of 390,000 cu m/day; two 1.4-m-diameter pipelines with a length of 1.5 km to carry water from the Mekong River to the treatment plant; and a 2-m-diameter pipeline with a length of 7.8 km (including a 630-m river crossing to be built using a microtunneling machine) to bring drinking water to more than 500,000 inhabitants of the capital city.

\n\n

To minimise the plant’s carbon footprint, its electricity requirements will be partly supplied by 27,000 sq m of solar panels with 3.8 MW installed capacity, said Vinci.

\n\n

The project, co-financed by the French Development Agency, the European Investment Bank and the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, is expected to employ more than 500 local workers and supervisory personnel at the height of activity.

\n\n

According to Vinci, the contract provides for a second conditional works phase with a value of US$45 million (€41 million). This phase is designed to double the plant's treatment capacity to 390,000 cu m/day. Following the handover of the second phase, the project will provide drinking water for a population of one million.

\n\n

This new project confirms Vinci Construction Grands Projets’ commitment to expanding drinking water access in Cambodia. In 2017, the company handed over the Niroth drinking water plant on the outskirts of Phnom Penh and the wastewater treatment plants at the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports. This year, the Vinci Construction Grands Projets hydraulic engineering teams also delivered two drinking water plants in Siem Reap and Chamkar Mon (in the centre of the Cambodian capital).

Global construction company Vinci Construction, through its subsidiary Freyssinet, has established a new subsidiary specialising in 3D printing of high-performance concrete. Named Concreative, the new company provides a fully integrated service, from design to on-site installation.

\n\n

In the first stage of its expansion, Concreative recently opened its first design-build factory in Dubai to meet the future demand in the regional UAE market.

\n\n

Dubai reportedly introduced a strategic 3D printing strategy in 2016, with the goal of basing a quarter of its new buildings on 3D printing technology by 2030 and becoming a leading global 3D printing hub by the end of the next decade.

\n\n

Concreative uses a technology patented by XtreeE, a start-up in which Vinci Construction is a partner and shareholder. The technology consists in extruding concrete layer by layer, with each layer printed via a digitally controlled nozzle.

\n\n

The 3D concrete printing technology is known to have many benefits, as it frees architects from the restrictions of standardised formwork. It offers a way to design and build complex concrete architectural and structural elements, deliver personalised, customised solutions and control cost and time to market. Its advantages also include cement savings of up to 70%, construction close to where it is needed and in areas that are difficult to access, and less arduous, less dangerous worksites.

\n\n

“Concreative is the result of a combination of two favourable circumstances: the arrival at maturity of the technology a year ago, and the decision by the United Arab Emirates to become a major construction market using and promoting 3D printing,” said Khalil Doghri, Freyssinet’s director for Middle East and India.

\n\n

“We applied the global approach that we are used to taking in our specialist civil engineering business activity. Beyond the technology provided by XtreeE, we developed the upstream and downstream services needed to put the architects’ ideas and the engineers’ requirements together and to put the goals of the Emirates into practice.”
