Korean global energy company SK E&S has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Philippines’ Department of Energy to propose the construction of LNG infrastructure worth US$1.7 billion. The company presented its blueprint that includes the construction of an LNG terminal with a capacity of up to 5 mil t per year, several LNG power plants of more than 600 MW, and an up to 150-km-long pipeline connecting the terminal and power plants in Luzon Island, north of the Philippines.

SK E&S said that it suggested the development of a large-scale LNG infrastructure based on its expectation that the Philippines government will need to build the infrastructure, in response to a growing demand for LNG in the country. The Philippines is said to have relied solely on the Malampaya offshore gas field as its only supply source for natural gas. However, the Malampaya gas reserves are expected to be depleted by 2024 and the growing demand for electricity to fuel economic growth underscores the strong needs for LNG imports.

The Department of Energy has reportedly forecast that the Philippines’ power demand will grow by an annual rate of 5.6% by 2040, while the demand for LNG will experience an annual growth rate of 1.7% mainly from gas power plants along with its economic growth. Thus, the Philippines government has been reviewing measures to complete LNG infrastructure by the end of 2023 to import LNG in earnest.

\r\n

According to SK E&S, if the proposed LNG infrastructure project is approved, it can create 800,000 jobs per year (or 2,200 jobs per day during the construction). The company has also recently opened an office in Manila in its effort to contribute to the LNG infrastructure development in the Philippines.

My Sandvik is the latest innovation in Sandvik crushers. Other automation features continuously measure and compensate for crusher liner wear, while Hydroset and the electric dump valve automatically provide overload protection to let tramp iron or other uncrushable material pass through. ASRi automatically adapts crushers to variations in feed conditions.

\r\n

The Sandvik CH800i comes with a range of upgrades, including a 65% stronger main shaft, and top and bottom shells that are up to 50% stronger than previous models, delivering more reliability and higher availability. It also has bolted rather than welded top and bottom shell liners to reduce maintenance time and add greater safety. Since no welding is needed when changing liners, the process is up to 90% faster, according to Sandvik.

The new CH800i crusher system can be purchased as a completely new crusher, or customers can choose a Sandvik Reborn solution, replacing an existing crusher for a new one and reutilises existing auxiliaries and infrastructure. This plug and play installation minimises disruption and maximises productivity, while delivering up to 40% cost savings compared to a complete crusher system.

Samsung C&T has been awarded a contract to build the new 1,760-MW Jawa 1 power plant in Indonesia. It is expected to be the biggest combined cycle power plant in Southeast Asia, which aims to supply electricity to approximately 11 million homes.

Samsung C&T has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 1,760 MW combined cycle power plant in Indonesia. The US$1 billion project, located in Cilamaya, will be developed by PT Jawa Satu Power, a consortium of PT Pertamina (Persero), Marubeni Corporation and Sojitz Corporation. Samsung C&T will form a joint venture agreement with General Electric (GE) Power and PT Meindo Elang Indah (Meindo).

\r\n

The new Jawa 1 power plant is part of the government’s 35,000 MW electrification programme, and is expected to be the biggest combined cycle power plant in Southeast Asia. Upon its completion, the plant will supply electricity to approximately 11 million homes.

\r\n

Samsung C&T has successfully completed various power plant projects around the world, including Muara Tawar power plant in Indonesia, Dongducheon CCPP and Kumho CHP-S1 projects in Korea, EMAL Phase 2 CCPP and Shuweihat 2 CCPP in the UAE.

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University has unveiled its new sports hall - The Wave. It is believed to be the first large-scale building in Southeast Asia that features an innovative timber construction technology known as mass engineered timber (MET).

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) recently inaugurated its new sports hall named The Wave. It is said to be the first large-scale building in Southeast Asia that features an innovative timber construction technology known as mass engineered timber (MET).

\n\n

According to NTU, such technology provides five times better heat insulation than concrete and is able to support a continuous 72-m wave-like roof without the need for internal columns. This opens up a cavernous three-storey space with no internal pillar, which can host three full-sized basketball courts or 13 badminton courts.

\n\n

The Wave is designed with external columns to support the seven long-span timber arches weighing over 440 t. This is possible because MET is much stronger than concrete or steel when comparing its weight-to-strength ratio, said NTU. And as the building process involves assembling prefabricated parts, construction is sped up, resulting in 25 percent savings in manpower.

\n\n

The Wave consists of 980 mechanised retractable seats, plus a special cooling system that chills the air as it enters the hall so that no conventional air-conditioning systems are needed, added NTU. Other eco-friendly features include energy-saving LED lighting and solar powered systems.

\n\n

The building is also designed to take advantage of its natural surroundings. Using computer modelling of the sun and wind patterns on-site, the building designers aimed to harness the natural winds, explained NTU, and thus good ventilation can be achieved with average wind speeds of about 0.4 m per second.

\n\n

“Sustainability is a core value of this university, and we walk the green talk, from education and research, to the building technologies on the NTU campus,” said Professor Bertil Andersson, president of NTU. “As an owner of a pine tree forest in Sweden, I’m a firm believer in sustainable forestry. I’m proud that NTU has pioneered the innovative use of wood in buildings here resulting in another iconic NTU structure, The Wave.”
