Robust economic growth and rapid urbanisation over the last few decades has resulted in the creation of a number of megacities in Asia. Against this back drop, 33 out of the projected 49 megacities will be located in the region, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The City Economics Database reveals that megacities were home to nearly 8.35% of the world’s population and contributed 15.50% to total global GDP in 2018. Of the world’s 40 megacities in 2018, 26 were located in Asia. GlobalData forecasts that the number of megacities will increase to 49 and more than two-thirds of these megacities (including 19 in China and six in India) are expected to be located in Asia by 2025.

Of the nine cities that are projected to become megacities between 2018 and 2025, five will be from China (Handan, Hangzhou, Harbin, Qingdao and Quanzhou), two from India (Chennai and Hyderabad) and one each from Egypt (Cairo) and Colombia (Bogota).

Asian megacities overtaking countries in terms of economic size

Rapid expansion of cities has resulted in creating a number of megacities that are larger and bigger, both in terms of population and GDP, than many individual countries. For instance, Tokyo, which is a US$1.50 trillion economy, had a greater GDP than that of Spain’s US$1.42 trillion while GDP of Shanghai (US$495 bil) and Beijing (US$459.6 bil) were greater than that of Argentina (US$475.4 bil) and Norway (US$439.5 bil) in 2018. Furthermore, Asian megacities are expected to contribute 9.4% to the global GDP and 6.6% to the total world population in 2025.

“Though Asian megacities dominate the list of megacities they are far behind their counterparts from the developed world in terms of per capita income, employment generation and living standards,” observed Tarun Bisht, economic research analyst at GlobalData. “Elevating productivity and creating job opportunities by harnessing favourable demographic characteristics should be the key focus areas to create sustainable megacities.”

A total of 6,645 planned and ongoing construction projects by the world’s megacities, valued at US$4.2 trillion and fuelled by the increase in population, are sparking interest in residential and infrastructural developments, says GlobalData.

The United Nations predicts that, between 2016 and 2030, the percentage of the world’s population living in cities with at least a million inhabitants is likely to grow from 23% to 27%, and the number of megacities is projected to increase from 31 to 41.

\r\n

Following a recent assessment of project pipelines in major cities worldwide by GlobalData, a listing of 50 ‘Construction Mega Cities’, discovers they each have a pipeline of projects with an investment value above US$30 billion.

Asia Pacific dominates the list\r\n

\r\n

Based on the report, Dubai tops the list with total project values amounting to US$374.2 billion, just ahead of London in second place with US$328.7 billion and Moscow in third with US$191.5 billion. However, the Asia Pacific region dominates the list, accounting for 25 of the 50 cities, and having a combined projects pipeline valued at US$1.7 trillion.

“The ranking of Construction Mega Cities in the Gulf states shows they are spending the most on major development projects relative to the size of their populations. Dubai, for example, has a population of 3.2 million, but it holds the top position in terms of the value of the construction mega-projects pipeline per capita,” explained Yasmine Ghozzi, economist at GlobalData.

“In addition, the number of people living in Doha has increased to 1.1 million as the Gulf state recruits tens of thousands of workers to work on major infrastructure projects linked to the 2022 FIFA World Cup; their project pipeline valued at US$105.6 billion.”

\r\n

There are major differences among the 50 Construction Mega Cities in terms of the value of the project pipelines compared to the size of the economies, reveals GlobalData. Visakhapatnam, one of India’s largest ports and an important industrial town and seaside resort, tops the ranking primarily owing to the government’s push on infrastructure and affordable housing.

Ms Ghozzi added, “The two main cities in Vietnam, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, also feature in the top 10 ranking of cities in terms of the value of the project pipeline in relation to the city’s economy.

\r\n

“Ho Chi Minh City’s economy recorded high economic growth in the first six months of 2018, with the construction industry recording growth of 7.7%. The city is expected to grow by around 8.8% a year, ahead of Hanoi (8%) and many other major cities in the region – outside of China and India – between 2018 and 2022.”
