The largest IKEA store in Southeast Asia has opened. Designed by Chapman Taylor, an award-winning practice of global architects and masterplanners, the store is located next to the new Central Westgate shopping complex at Bang Yai, near Bangkok, which will be one of Thailand’s largest shopping malls.

This ambitious new IKEA store design integrates several new store concepts such as cafés, a library and break-out areas, all within the sales areas and showrooms. The IKEA canteen will offer a “branch-exclusive” menu for customers who enjoy the Swedish firm’s culinary side. Full-height glazing, large skylights and naturally lit atriums throughout the sales areas bring the space to life.

The store is fully integrated into the shopping centre, allowing customers to enter and leave the store from three different floor levels, as well as enter via a direct link from The MRT ‘Purple’ public transport railway line. It will host 29 check-out points and be served by 1,900 parking spaces.

IKEA Bang Yai has received LEED platinum certification, the highest level in its category, and is designed to receive Green Mark platinum accreditation as well. This level of sustainability has been achieved by using photovoltaic cells for energy production, high-quality insulation and cutting-edge HVAC strategy and systems.

Chapman Taylor led the design of this project, working closely with other international consultants, as well as the IKEA construction and establishment teams, to realise this landmark Southeast Asian development for IKEA. The firm is proud to have designed and fully delivered the project from inception to opening, and look forward to further collaboration with ambitious clients like IKEA in creating innovative new developments in the region.
